Sea Fever

I was three when I met the sea for the first time. I don't remember the meeting. When I was five, I met her again when we were invited for actor Pradeep Kumar's (of 'Taj Mahal' fame) son's wedding in Bombay. There are four things I remember about that trip. Both of us sisters got mumps during the train journey and spent the trip in scarves with swollen cheeks. And we walked around Juhu beach in big groups, my father got caught by Ashok Kumar or 'Dadamuni' while he tried to take his photo by making me stand close to him, and the great actor just smiled, and lastly, being on set for the shooting of '100 Days' and wondering how Madhuri Dixit was so beautiful to look at! I don't really remember the sea.
Then when I turned ten, my dad spent a number of days in Madras (not yet Chennai) for work. My mother, sister and I went to Madras for our summer holidays (yes, summer) to spend some time with him. We went for two weeks, came back after 27 days due to heavy rainfall. But that's another story.

But it was at Marina Beach that I remember feeling something for this gigantic marvel of nature. Holding my father's hands, a little in awe of the big waves, it was the first time I felt attraction towards this endless body of water, melting into the horizon. That was 1995. After that were separated for many years as we had to stop traveling. I met her again at Mumbai in 2008, during a work trip. And I knew I was in love.

By this time I knew that there is a river by my name in North Bengal, and was convinced that my strange attraction towards the sea was because it was my destiny. Quite childish you'd say.

The attraction though, refused to go. As I matured, it grew with me. I can spend hours with the sea without the company of friends. It is always extremely difficult to get out of the water. The sea talks to me, she understands me, my silence. Like most people, I've only seen the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea from Puri, Digha, Chennai, Tajpur, Udaipur , Shankarpur, Mumbai and Goa. But everytime I've seen a different side to her beauty. As if to reflect my different moods. And I've always tried to capture her gorgeousness through my lenses.
